IDENTIFY THE HAZARD
In the wide remit of managing the health and safety of workers there are many elements to consider. From the perspective of Occupational Hygiene we can look at the Hazards and identify those that might cause harm to workers, chemical, physical or mental.
ASSESS THE RISK
Once the Hazards are identified we can then assess the Risk to the workers under the actual circumstances of use. Are reasonable steps being taken to prevent harm occurring to the workers? Is anyone else potentially at risk? Are control measures in place? How effective are any controls? Is there anything else which can be reasonably done to minimise significant Risks?
Without observing in-situ working practices and workers interactions with control measures the Risk assessment process will be of limited Occupational Hygiene value.
Diamond can produce Risk Assessments for you or we can help by providing guidance to enable you to undertake your own Assessments.
REVIEW THE ASSESSMENT
Once an assessment has been done it is important to remember that things change (work practices, machinery, products, etc…). Assessments need to be reviewed to check they are still valid and changed if there is reasonable evidence to do so.
