What is COSHH?


COSHH (in the UK) is the law that requires employers to control workers exposures to substances that are hazardous to health within the workplace. Compliance with COSHH involves an active initiative by the employer to prevent or minimise workers exposure to hazardous substances.


You can prevent or reduce workers’ exposure to hazardous substances by finding out what the health hazards are; deciding how to prevent harm to health (risk assessment); providing control measures to reduce harm to health; making sure they are used; keeping all control measures in good working order; providing information, instruction and training for employees and others; providing monitoring and health surveillance in appropriate cases; planning for emergencies.

We can work alongside your in house expertise to give advice or we can provide a consultant to take the task on. In our experience, COSHH is more successful the more ownership company employees take, relying on Diamond for assistance when needed.


We believe it’s not a completely “desk based” task and to generate a “suitable and sufficient” Risk Assessment (COSHH Assessment) observations and discussions with the workers in situ need to be considered. Most businesses use substances, or products that are mixtures of substances. Some processes create substances. These could cause harm to employees, contractors and other people.


Sometimes substances are easily recognised as harmful. Common substances such as paint, bleach or dust from natural materials may also BE HARMFUL. Once the Hazard has been identified its then the Risk Assessment can begin.
